To end the violent agitation, the Assam Accord was signed on 15 August 1985 between the Government of India and AASU leaders. The accord in the main highlighted: (a) the detection and deletion of the names of foreigners from the voters' list and their immediate deportation; and (b) constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social and linguistic identity and heritage of Assamese people (Egreteau 2006).
